What Are Hypopressives?

This Technique Was Created By Dr Marcel Caufriez

Dr Caufriez originally developed this technique to be used in a clinical setting as a recovery, treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction.

It has grown from that to become a fitness technique used in the prevention of it as well. This low-impact method combines different poses and breathing to decreases the pressure built up within a person’s core.

Hypopressives are not meant to be self-taught.

To be effective it is highly recommended that you consult a trained professional. Even after that, hypopressive classes are advised as well. At each class, the instructor does not participate. Rather, hypopressives rely on guided cues from instructors/therapists. If you try to follow this treatment without the aid of the professional at first, it will not be as effective.

Physiotherapy Treatments
Hypopressives are meant to strengthen the core. They can treat and prevent pelvic floor dysfunction.

  • Chronic Back or Pelvic Pain
  • Incontinence
  • Testicular Pain or Erectile Dysfunction
These are some of the poses taught in this practice:

  • Active Eccentric Lengthening
  • Auto Elongation
  • Axial Shift Forward
  • Decapitation of Shoulder Girdle

    How Hypopressives Work

A Methodical Technique That Focuses On Building Core Strength

Hypopressive focus in building core strength in a unique way. Using unique breathing techniques you can learn to decompress your chest cavity. The apnea (cessation of breathing) and false inhale cause an automatic suction/decongestion of the cavity. In changing poses, you are using gravity to your advantage as well.

Proper technique will relax your core muscles and begin to build strength. Hypopressive stimulate the nerves around the core and pelvic floor.

With continued treatment, these muscles will continue to function at a high efficiency. This will help those with pelvic floor dysfunction handle the pressures of everyday activity.
