The Mechanics of Massage

This Treatment Targets The Muscles & the Brain

When we feel relaxed or happy it is due in part to the release of endorphins. Endorphins are a hormone released into the brain when certain nerve centres are triggered. This neurological response is the first of two benefits to massage.

Injury rehabilitation is rarely pain free. In some instances we will prescribe massage as a complementary treatment to make you comfortable during your recovery.

The physical response to massage is said to improve the circulation in muscles and joints. Improving circulation means improving overall mobility. Physical manipulation of soft tissue improves the nutrient supply to the affected area. This allows the muscle to heal.

Massage relaxes sore or stiff muscles. When muscles contract, they can push down on nerves, causing pain. Through massage, they are able to relax and allow the nerve cluster to breathe. Our registered massage therapists will walk you through treatment step by step and provide you with stretches and exercise that will keep your body feeling good.

    What is Massage Therapy?

    More Than Just Relaxation

The art of massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissues within the body. This includes muscles, tendons, ligaments, connective tissues and joints. It can stimulate nerve endings to promote pain relief, while improving circulation through area. This can lead to improved mobility and function.

The history of this technique dates back thousands of years. Though its true origins are unknown, the earliest evidence of it dates back to India around 1500 BCE. It was advanced by Per Henrik Ling at the beginning of the 19th century who pioneered the Swedish movement system. That laid the ground for the Swedish massage technique - one that has influenced North American practitioners heavily.
