Physiotherapy Is About Understanding How The Body Works

The earliest documented form of physiotherapy was in Sweden in the early 19th century. Per Henrik Ling - said to be the father of Swedish gymnastics - founded the Royal Central Institute for Gymnastics in 1813. He studied the effect exercise and movement had on patient recovery. The Swedish word for physiotherapist is sjukgymnast - which when roughly translated describes someone involved in gymnastics for those who are ill.

Physiotherapy evolved throughout the years, and by the end of the 19th century was recognized by a number of countries. It is now centred around one premise - to maximise the quality of life for a patient.

Modern day physiotherapy has not lost sight of its origins. Trained therapists (or PT’s) are experts in prescribing exercise that stimulates healing and mobility within an affected area. They will also suggest a ‘dose’ of a particular exercise. Their knowledge of biomechanics has since been supplemented with additional training in fields such as acupuncture.

    How Does Physiotherapy Work?

Physiotherapy Treatments Are Be Based On A Patient’s Needs and Ability

Physiotherapists are big picture people. When assessing a case they look not only at the afflicted area but the body as a whole. Treatment plans will reflect an end goal or improving basic quality of life.

A combination of exercise and stretching is at the core of this treatment. With an understanding of your abilities, our physiotherapists will prescribe exercises that work for you. For example - a patient lacking basic mobility to due an illness may be instructed to take regular walks. Simple on the surface - what is being done here is making the body feel normal again through movement. In specific cases of nerve, bone, ligament or muscle damage, targeted exercise is prescribed in hopes it can restore basic mobility and promote healing.

As well as the standard exercise program, physiotherapists may also employ energy therapy. Ultrasound treatment is one such example; pulses tighten the muscle, easing pain and promoting healing.
